Holistic Fueling For Ironman Triathletes
Publisher: Ben Greenfield Fitness
by Jaakko Hiekkaranta [Featured Reviewer]
Date Added: 10/05/2009 05:52:25
This nutritional guide by Ben Greenfield is very easy to read and to understand. This book contains very good explanations on how different types of fueling affect our bodies. Also added are several daily meal examples for different training phases (base/build, taper/race, off-season/rest...). If you are an athlete (or non-athlete) looking to improve your helath, energy, performance or appearance reading this book is a good way to start on the good nutritional path.

16-week Half Ironman Triathlon Training Plan - EXPERIENCED
Publisher: ironguides
by Jaakko Hiekkaranta [Featured Reviewer]
Date Added: 10/03/2009 12:56:57
This Ironguides training-plan literally saved my season this year. After an injury-plagued summer my training for my end-of-season 70.3 race was without any direction. However about 5 weeks before the event I got a hold of this training program and with small adjustments to meet personal needs and good training execution I was able to have a breakthrough race by winning my age group. Even though I wasn’t able to do the full program it seemed to work wonders. The plan is comprehensively structured and very easy to follow. A very good help for any self-coached athlete.

This book reveals nicely the dark side of professional cycling. It was perhaps the most controversial book I've ever read and extremely interesting while at the same time distracting and worrying. Never had I thought doping be such an open thing inside the cycling community. Is this a true story? Will we ever know for sure? Well worth the read regardless

Daniels' Running Formula, Second Edition
Publisher: Human Kinetics
by Jaakko Hiekkaranta [Featured Reviewer]

I had been wanting to read this book since I first heard about it way back when. This was only the sencond book on purely running that I've read and I was not disappointed! This book is a must-have manual for every runner, serious or recreational. It is very easy to understand and follow. Run training in this book is explained in a scientific but comprehensive manner and it is done in a way that nicely describes the "why" behind things. By reading this book you will learn ways to make your endurance, lactate threshold, VO2Max and mechanical running speed better.

Championship Triathlon Training
Publisher: Human Kinetics
by Jaakko Hiekkaranta [Featured Reviewer]

I think this book is a good manual for beginner/intermediate self-coached athletes or a support resource for athletes working with a coach that has a similar mindset as the authors. The periodisation model the book explains is a very good starting point for athletes that are starting in the sport. The actual training plans provided in the book however seem a little bit too complex. Especially for people who are new to the sport, following the training plan can be an achievement in itself, but at at least it gives a good basic progression model. The best part of the book however is the technique section where swim/bike/run techniques are explained in a very understandable fashion. The authors also make a good point in stressing and arguing the importance of strenght in the sport of triathlon and a good strenght training model can be found in the book. Overall a good read that can help gain knowledge especially for beginner/intermediate athletes.
